Researchers at the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council studied 20,000 men and women from the city of Norfolk who were between the ages of 45 and 79 in the years between 1993 and 1997. The participants filled out questionnaires tracking their health habits. Then, their death rates were recorded until 2006. The study was reported in the January 8, 2008 edition of the journal PLOS Medicine. It is part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), conducted in 10 European countries. EPIC is the largest-ever study of diet and health.
This is an extraordinarily valuable study. If a pharmaceutical drug could add even two or three years to life, the news would be trumpeted around the world. But these four simple lifestyle habits not only add an average of 14 years, they also allow those years to be lived with greater vigor and vitality. Something we knead to know
This is down to the little known but widespread Chorleywood Bread Process which was implemented post World War II to help feed the hungry Brits during post war austerity. The process uses lots of chemicals and enzymes (many with health risks) GM yeast and other additives that cut down the production time for supermarket loaves drastically. The lovely soft squidgy tempting loaves we see sitting on supermarket shelves are a far cry from real bread. These loves are produced using the Chorleywood Bread Process (CBP) and add many man made chemical and lots of air. Bread that is baked using traditional methods has very little air and is therefore smaller and denser than CBP loaves. We have become used to much bigger loaves, with longer shelf lives that we check freshness using the squeeze test!
There are two very different costs here:-
- Low cost bread
- A far more expensive cost to public health through the daily consumption of bread crammed full of artificial and potentially dangerous ingredients.
Since the CBP was invented in the 1960s we have rising obesity and a massive rise in coeliac disease could CBP be one of the main culprits based on our huge consumption of bread produced using this process. All in all the Chorleywood Process is bad for our health and bad for the high street because its bad for the traditional baker. Maybe you are keen to make your own real bread at home where you have total control of what is going into you bread, this could be either by rolling you sleeves up and mix, knead and shape your bread by hand or simple by suing a bread machine most often my preferred option! Intermittent fasting (IF) is to consistently go without food for longer periods of time than is typical for an average daily diet.
There are many different types, some promote your skipping breakfast or evening meal ; others fast every other day, two days a week, once per week, or even just once per month.
So what happens to your body when you fast?
Fasting accelerates how quickly your body clears out the waste left by dead and damaged cells, this process is called autophagy. Many scientists believe that a failure to remove accumulated cellular debris is a major cause of the chronic diseases which are associated with ageing such as dementia, heart disease and cancer.
Beneficial effects of IF highlighted in both animal and human studies include:
- Reduced cardiovascular disease risk. Reduced cancer risk.
- Potential reduced diabetes risk.
- Protection against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
- Improved cognitive function.
So getting hungry every now and then is clearly a healthy thing to do so long as your calorie intake is high enough to maintain a healthy weight. It is also critical that you drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated when fasting. However IF is not recommended for everyone, particularly children under 18 and pregnant or breast feeding women.
The 5:2 Day Diet
My specific choice for an IF diet is the 5:2 Day Diet which is a clinically proven intermittent diet that not only helps you lose those stubborn unwanted pounds and is very good for you but is easy to follow. You fast on 2 non consecutive days a week, reducing your calorie intake to 650 if you are male and 500 if you are female, meaning that you don’t feel like you have such a huge mountain to climb as normal food consumption is only a few hours away!
You can expect to lose more weight than you would on a standard calorie-controlled diet but as listed above there are many other health benefits associated with this diet, such as a reduced risk of cancer; reduced blood pressure; overall anti-ageing effects; improved well-being and improved mood and energy levels.
The 5:2 diet was also endorsed by Dr Michael Mosley in a BBC Two Horizon Documentary.
Dr Mosley stuck to this diet for five weeks, in which time he lost nearly a stone in weight and his blood markers, like insulin, glucose and cholesterol, improved. Sustaining this, he said, would greatly reduce his risk of contracting age-related diseases like cancer and diabetes.
Intermittent diet research carried out by Genesis the breast cancer prevention charity examined 100 overweight women and found that the women who followed a strict 650 calories a day for just two days a week (they ate what they wanted on the other days) reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 40%. The researchers found that this 2 day a week caloric restriction almost halved cancer-causing hormones in high risk women.
Do you live longer if you fast?
Studies of fasting in both rodents and humans appear to indicate a connection between calorie restriction and longevity. In one study of overweight men and women, a calorie-restricted diet improved markers of ageing such as insulin levels* and body temperature**
Fasting might also improve longevity by delaying the onset of age-related diseases including Alzheimer’s, heart disease and diabetes.
* It is widely acknowledged that higher insulin levels promote cancer.
**A large study published in 2011 compared the ages and body temperatures of 18,630 people from 20 to 98 years old and the results indicated low body temperature as a bio marker for longevity.

Whilst we would all probably prefer to eat organic it can prove to be too expensive for those on tight budgets. However eating five fruit and vegetable servings a day from least contaminated could reduce your exposure to pesticides by almost 90 percent compared to five servings daily from the most contaminated.
Pesticides can create health risks and particularly to children or those with health concerns. Research indicates that they may cause disruptions in the normal functioning of the nervous and endocrine systems, and increase the risk of cancer.

A study published last month in Nature, the globally renowned interdisciplinary scientific journal, found that resveratrol, a polyphenol abundant in red wine, stimulates an ancient evolutionary anti-stress mechanism that protects human cells against genetic damage and thus may protect the body against age-related diseases.
Resveratrol the wonder ingredient of red wine is shown to be the elixir of life in a study published last month.
A study published last month in Nature, the globally renowned interdisciplinary scientific journal, found that resveratrol, a polyphenol abundant in red wine, stimulates an ancient evolutionary anti-stress mechanism that protects human cells against genetic damage and thus may protect the body against age-related diseases.
Scientists have long disputed the beneficial effects of resveratrol but this study should now dispel the controversy and mystery surrounding its health benefits and how it works. It possibly even provides an explanation of the ‘French Paradox’ a catchphrase used for the paradoxical observation that French people have a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease whilst also having a relatively high fat diet and happen to be regular, moderate drinkers of red wine, moderation being important as heavy drinking is linked to many degenerative diseases.
“This stress response represents a layer of biology that has been largely overlooked, and resveratrol turns out to activate it at much lower concentrations than those used in prior studies,” Senior investigator Professor Paul Schimmel.
The study found that resveratrol mimics another molecule, tyrosine, a naturally occurring amino acid in the body. Tyrosine is involved in activating an ancient chemical pathway to limit stress and damage to the DNA of cells – this stress and damage would normally result in ageing and disease.
The ancient chemical pathway – Tyrosine normally binds to one of a family of enzymes that are thought to have evolved hundreds of millions of years ago when life existed as simple microbes.
The study suggests that TyrRS, one of these enzymes, becomes activated when resveratrol binds to it. This causes the enzyme to move into the cell nucleus where it helps to protect the DNA of the chromosomes against genetic damage.
When the TyrRS enzyme enters the cell nucleus it activates a number of protective genes including p53, an anti-cancer gene, which suppresses tumours, and the CETP, better known as the longevity genes implicated in extending lifespans and combating age-related illnesses.
“With these findings we have a new, fundamental mechanism for the known beneficial effects of resveratrol. Based on these results, it is conceivable that moderate consumption of red wine (rich in resveratrol) would give a person enough resveratrol to evoke a protective effect via this pathway” said Dr Mathew Sajish – Lead Researcher.
The study suggests that the reason why resveratrol, which is a plant compound, can cause such a positive effect on animals is becauers the TyrRS enzyme is part of an ancient defence system that predates animal and plant kingdoms.
“We believe that TyrRS has evolved to act as a top-level switch or activator of a fundamental cell-protecting mechanism that works in virtually all forms of life,” Said Dr Sajish.
Many studies have now indicated that resveratrol possesses anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties. Resveratrol can be found in seeds, roots and stalks of vine plants and is particularly abundant in the skin of grapes, possibly as a defence against fungal attack. Red wine typically contains more resveratrol than white wine because during fermentation the grape skins tend to be left on for longer. Peanuts and soy also contain resveratrol.

Scientific studies show that resveratrol boosts our muscles’ ability to absorb glucose from food, meaning more calories go into muscles and fewer go into fat cells.
Research presented at an Endocrine Society conference showed that in the laboratory, resveratrol inhibited production of mature fat cells and hindered fat storage. Another study found that mice fed a high-fat diet with resveratrol weighed almost the same as those served a low fat diet without the supplement. 2) The better the Matcha quality the finer and greener the powder will be. High quality powder will give you a creamy taste and will smoother than the low quality versions. Lower grade Matcha will be more coarse, bitter and possibly gritty whilst drinking – trust us this is not a great experience.
