What is hydrolysed collagen?
For the collagen protein found in foods and most supplements to be utilized by the body, it must first be broken down many times by the digestive system, and then absorbed through the intestine into the blood in the precise form needed. Its then reassembled into your collagen at the proper site. Protein digestion of dietary collagen is often incomplete, resulting in some very large peptide chains. These long molecules are not well utilized in the bodys efforts to keep up with the declining production.
Hydrolysed collagen as a food supplement came about later on, once scientists learned to break the long chain triple helix protein into shorter pieces, and then to separate the 3 helices from each other. The resulting short individual peptides make up hydrolysed collagen. Cleaving peptides into sections is known as hydrolysis. The advantages of using Hydrolysed collagen are, it is highly digestible and is easily absorbed and distributed throughout the human body. With high end collagen supplements, the protein breakdown is pre-engineered and much more thorough, resulting in a more uniform result: usable small chain peptides and amino acids, ready to go.
Where does it come from?
Cell damage is caused by many environmental things that essentially all lead to something called oxidative stress in the body.ageing Oxidative stress causes free radical production within the body. Free radicals are extremely reactive high energy molecules that when they collide with other molecules within the body are able to damage them. When this occurs within mitochondria their function and number decline. This is important because mitochondria are the power houses of the cell converting oxygen and the food we eat into energy which we need to do literally everything, breathe, think, walk and run. When you prevent this mitochondrial damage you achieve significant health benefits.
How you prevent the damage or aging?
Hydrolysed Liquid Collagen is a complex structural protein rich in Amino Acids and proteins that are found naturally within the joints. Collagen is a supplement which provides many benefits, designed to aid many bodily health areas from skin care, cartilage/joint regeneration to fat management. Liquid collagen supplements are renowned for speeding up the bodys metabolism and nourishing muscles.
Why would i take this supplement?
GBR Nutrition Liquid Collagen contains a composition of amino acids that is characterised through a high content in hydroxproline, glycine and proline. These high-proteins improve the management of body fat, nourishing the muscles; the nourished muscles will use the excess calories in your body for substance and speed up metabolism.
It is a well-documented fact that as we age so too does our skin. 90% of dermal volume and 75% of the bodys skin tissue is made up by Collagen. As we age skin decreases its collagen production and our skin will begin to wrinkle, roughen and even discolour. Liquid Collagen stimulates the skins natural production of collagen, whilst providing key nourishment and protection to ultimately smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, restore lost elasticity in the skin and regenerate skin all over the body. Liquid Collagen is also very beneficial in hydrating the skin keeping it firm and toned.
Liquid Collagen very much suits all athletes and particularly bodybuilders through improving strength and helping aching joints. Liquid Collagen is rich in essential amino acids and proteins, found to provide 13 nutrients. An essential protein to help joint recovery is collagen, of which is a natural source of our joint cartilage. Collagen assists the movement of the cartilage, allowing for the joints to move smoothly. In the competitiveness of various sports and the strain and intensity of training, many athletes understandably may suffer from aches and pains in the joint areas. Even for those who arent sporty joints and cartilage can easily be worn down through time. These aches and pains in the joints (also an effect of arthritis) can be very much benefited by supplementation with Liquid Collagen which provides a natural solution to decrease the pain whilst improving on joint mobility.
In the simplest terms, mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. They are the structures that produce the energy a cell needs by converting oxygen and nutrients into ATP. did-you-know ATP is the cell’s energy currency, it may be helpful to think of ATP as a battery that gets charged, and as soon as it is charged, it sets off a spark of energy that can be used to do work in the body.
Thus we need mitochondria to walk, run, speak, think, pretty much everything we do.
Memory Loss (Cognitive decline)
Why does cognitive decline occur as a consequence of ageing?
The main reason is cell damage or ‘Damage Theory’.
How does cell damage cause ageing?
Cell damage is caused by something called oxidative stress. When the body is exposed to oxidative stress, free radicals are produced. Free radicals are extremely reactive high energy molecules that when they collide with other molecules within the body are able to damage them. When this occurs within mitochondria their function and number decline. The rate and severity of cognitive decline is directly linked to the amount of mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress.
How you prevent the damage or ageing?
When you prevent this mitochondrial damage you prevent the cognitive decline. Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L Carnitine slow or even stop the damage and destruction of mitochondria. Research studies prove that Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L Carnitine protect mitochondria from oxidative damage and therefore the cognitive decline associated with age. Studies also prove the place of antioxidants as a front line therapy against Alzheimer’s.
What are the health benefits?
Prevent or stop the cognitive decline associated with age.
If you’re worried about developing Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or age-associated dementia taking Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) can delay the onset of the disease but also have benefits for people of all ages who desire to maintain or increase their mental performance. You can purchase both supplements in high quality form and correct dosage from the NatuRem Shop on this website.
Well research proves you can with these 4 healthy behaviours!
It has been proven that people who practice four specific lifestyle behaviours live, on average, 14 more years compared to people who don’t practice those healthy behaviours, according to a new British study.
The four behaviours are:-
- Not smoking
- Performing regular exercise
- Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol
- Eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day
All have been independently shown to increase lifespan, but this was the first study to examine their combined value.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council studied 20,000 men and women from the city of Norfolk who were between the ages of 45 and 79 in the years between 1993 and 1997. The participants filled out questionnaires tracking their health habits. Then, their death rates were recorded until 2006. The study was reported in the January 8, 2008 edition of the journal PLOS Medicine. It is part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), conducted in 10 European countries. EPIC is the largest-ever study of diet and health.
This is an extraordinarily valuable study. If a pharmaceutical drug could add even two or three years to life, the news would be trumpeted around the world. But these four simple lifestyle habits not only add an average of 14 years, they also allow those years to be lived with greater vigor and vitality. The only behaviour I question is the one regarding alcohol consumption, as some studies have shown ambiguous results. But by all means, if you don’t practice the other three, start now!

Reasons to Become a Matcha Convert.
Matcha is Very High in Antioxidants
Antioxidants are the amazing nutrients and enzymes that are essential for fighting life threatening diseases; the negative effects of UV radiation which in turn gives us younger-looking skin and all other age related decline. They are something that the health-conscious seek from foods such as raw fruits, green veggies, not forgetting dark chocolate. ORAC measures the potency of antioxidants found in food and beverages. Matcha offers a stunning high level of ORAC units: With 1573 units it surpasses all natural antioxidant rich food known so far.
Matcha is Packed with Catechin, EGCg
Not all antioxidants are the same and green tea contains a specific set of organic compounds known as catechins. These catechins are the most potent and beneficial of all the antioxidants and more specifically one called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) which happens to make up 60% of the catechins in Matcha Green Tea is recognised for its cancer fighting properties. Scientists have found that Japanese Matcha Green Tea contains over 100 times more EGCg than any other tea.Laboratory studies suggest that EGCG works at the cellular level to fight various cancers, including cancer of the breast (1,2) pancreas (3) mouth (4) colon (5) and prostate (6, 7)
Matcha Burns Calories
Matcha green tea has unique thermogenic properties that promotes increased fat oxidation according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study reported that consuming matcha green tea increased thermogenesis, the rate at which our bodies burn calories, from 10% to 40% of daily energy use. Meaning drinking matcha has the potential to increase your body’s ability to burn fat and calories by 4!!! Another study found that drinking matcha before exercise increased the body’s fat burning potential by 25%. Matcha increases your metabolism enabling you to burn more calories without the negative side effects of lots of diet supplements currently on the market. Matcha causes no negative side-effects such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure.
Matcha Detoxifies the Body
Another great benefit of Matcha is that it helps to detoxify the body. This is due to its chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll helps plants turn sunlight into food but it also removes heavy elements and harmful chemicals from our bodies. Matcha is particularly rich with chlorophyll as it’s covered whilst it is growing which causes a tremendous increase in chlorophyll and amino acid production making it much more powerful than tea. It also fortifies the Immune System.
Matcha Calms the Mind
For over 800 years Japanese Matcha Green Tea has been used by Zen Buddhist monks to enhance their meditation enabling them to relax their minds but still remain energised. This is due to the amino acid L-Theanine contained in the Macha leaves. L-Theanine boosts alpha waves (the brain waves present in deep relaxation) and promotes alert relaxation. L-Theanine has had significant clinical results for not only naturally calming the brain but focusing it too.
Matcha Improves Concentration and Memory
L-Theanine increases the production of the two chemicals dopamine and serotonin which in turn serve to enhance mood, promote better concentration and improve memory.
Matcha Boosts Energy Levels and Extends Endurance
Matcha Green Tea contains 30mg – 40mg of caffeine which is much less than in a cup of coffee which will contain as much as 200mg, however, when you drink matcha you will experience a very clean boost of energy that can last 3-6 hours. This clean energy boost means no jitters, no anxiety and no crash. This is due to the minimal amount of caffeine mixed with incredibly potent antioxidants which will keep you calm, focussed, and energized for hours.
Matcha Improves Cholesterol
Studies have shown that people who drink Match Green Tea on a regular basis have lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. Also men who drink Matcha Green Tea are about 11% less likely to develop heart disease than those who don’t.

Protect against depression.
Regular meditation & other spiritual & religious practices have been shown to help protect against depression. and supplementing with Co-Q-10 could also help combat depression. New research from the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Columbia University indicates that these practices actually have the effect of thickening the brain’s cortex. A study which involved over 100 adults, some of whom had a family history of depression that put them at a higher risk, found that the participants who placed a high value on spirituality or religion had thicker cortices, these were observed on brain MRI scans.
It was noted that the thickened brain cortices which were seen in the study were the same cortical areas shown to have thinned in earlier studies of people at high risk of depression. Whilst more study is needed these results suggest that practicing spirituality or religion may protect against major depression by thickening the brain cortex and therefore preventing the cortical thinning that normally occurs with major depression. Moreover the research highlighted that this change was particularly evident in the participants who were predisposed to depression because of a family history.
Some earlier studies by this same team at Columbia University showed a 90 percent reduction in major depression in study participants who said they spirituality or religion were an important part of their lives and whose parents suffered from the disease. Supplementing could also help combat depression and a recent study in Cairo, Egypt has uncovered an unusual property of Co-Q-10 is that it has the potential to eliminate depression and anxiety. Co-Q-10 is a super antioxidant and cellular metabolism energy booster for inner cellular mitochondria activity. When that declines, early aging and other neurological, auto-immune, and heart diseases easily invade.

Good Morning Sunshine
This can be pure sunlight or bright indoor lighting. So there may be another reason my early morning yoga makes me happy, beyond the release of endorphins!!! These new findings fit with the growing body of evidence that suggests that keeping our body clocks synchronized with the natural light-dark cycle is not only beneficial to our health but to our waistlines too. Researchers at Chicago’s Northwestern University recruited adults (average age 30) from the Chicago area who wore wrist monitors that tracked their exposure to both light and sleep patterns for a week.
The participants also diarised what they ate in daily logs so the researchers could estimate their calorie intake and they found that the earlier light exposure occurred during the day, the lower the individuals body mass index. The researchers accounted for participants activity level, sleep pattern/timing, age and calorie intake. The people with the strongest correlation between light and BMI were exposed to more than 500 lux of light, equivalent to bright indoor lighting. Outdoor light can range from 1,000 lux up into the hundreds of thousands.
The study was published in the journal PLoS One (http://www.plosone.org/) The findings weren’t necessarily surprising as it is assumed that exposure to light plays a role in regulating metabolism. There are animal studies in mice where disrupting the natural light-dark cycle with long periods of exposure to light leads to weight gain. The conclusions drawn were that we should get more bright light between 8 a.m. and mid-day and that about 20 to 30 minutes of morning light is enough to affect BMI (body mass index). So modifying light does have potential for use in weight management which would complement similar recent research showing that getting enough sleep helps people avoid weight gain. The field of chronobiology (the study of internal biological clocks) is growing which means so does interest in exploring these types of weight management interventions. Satchin Panda, an associate professor at the Salk Institute who studies chronobiology said “This is a very interesting paper.
Light is a very important cue in synchronizing our internal body clocks and those clocks are key to helping our bodies perform optimally.” So which of us needs to pay attention? How about anyone who stays up late working or even relaxing and then needs the alarm to wake them unwillingly from their sleep in order to face the day? Sleep experts say that unfortunately, we have caveman’s hard-core wiring and that means up with the sun! And if we burn the candle at both ends?
This primitive hardwiring in our bodies reads insufficient sleep as – Danger, store fat!!!!!
Something we knead to know
This is down to the little known but widespread Chorleywood Bread Process which was implemented post World War II to help feed the hungry Brits during post war austerity. The process uses lots of chemicals and enzymes (many with health risks) GM yeast and other additives that cut down the production time for supermarket loaves drastically. The lovely soft squidgy tempting loaves we see sitting on supermarket shelves are a far cry from real bread. These loves are produced using the Chorleywood Bread Process (CBP) and add many man made chemical and lots of air. Bread that is baked using traditional methods has very little air and is therefore smaller and denser than CBP loaves. We have become used to much bigger loaves, with longer shelf lives that we check freshness using the squeeze test!
There are two very different costs here:-
- Low cost bread
- A far more expensive cost to public health through the daily consumption of bread crammed full of artificial and potentially dangerous ingredients.
Since the CBP was invented in the 1960s we have rising obesity and a massive rise in coeliac disease could CBP be one of the main culprits based on our huge consumption of bread produced using this process. All in all the Chorleywood Process is bad for our health and bad for the high street because its bad for the traditional baker. The Real Bread Campaign explains what Real Bread is all about and will help you to find your local suppliers.
Speak to the independent bakeries in your community and if theyre baking additive-free bread do what you can to support them. Other places to find additive free, high quality and organic breads are at Farmers markets.
Maybe you are keen to make your own real bread at home where you have total control of what is going into you bread, this could be either by rolling you sleeves up and mix, knead and shape your bread by hand or simple by suing a bread machine most often my preferred option! The Panasonic brand of bread makers are the ones I have found make the best loaves. Lets rise together and fight for better bread in Britain!!!
Intermittent fasting (IF) is to consistently go without food for longer periods of time than is typical for an average daily diet.
There are many different types, some promote your skipping breakfast or evening meal ; others fast every other day, two days a week, once per week, or even just once per month.
So what happens to your body when you fast?
Fasting accelerates how quickly your body clears out the waste left by dead and damaged cells, this process is called autophagy. Many scientists believe that a failure to remove accumulated cellular debris is a major cause of the chronic diseases which are associated with ageing such as dementia, heart disease and cancer.
Beneficial effects of IF highlighted in both animal and human studies include:
- Reduced cardiovascular disease risk. Reduced cancer risk.
- Potential reduced diabetes risk.
- Protection against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
- Improved cognitive function.
So getting hungry every now and then is clearly a healthy thing to do so long as your calorie intake is high enough to maintain a healthy weight. It is also critical that you drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated when fasting. However IF is not recommended for everyone, particularly children under 18 and pregnant or breast feeding women.
The 5:2 Day Diet
My specific choice for an IF diet is the 5:2 Day Diet which is a clinically proven intermittent diet that not only helps you lose those stubborn unwanted pounds and is very good for you but is easy to follow. You fast on 2 non consecutive days a week, reducing your calorie intake to 650 if you are male and 500 if you are female, meaning that you don’t feel like you have such a huge mountain to climb as normal food consumption is only a few hours away!
You can expect to lose more weight than you would on a standard calorie-controlled diet but as listed above there are many other health benefits associated with this diet, such as a reduced risk of cancer; reduced blood pressure; overall anti-ageing effects; improved well-being and improved mood and energy levels.
The 5:2 diet was also endorsed by Dr Michael Mosley in a BBC Two Horizon Documentary.
Dr Mosley stuck to this diet for five weeks, in which time he lost nearly a stone in weight and his blood markers, like insulin, glucose and cholesterol, improved. Sustaining this, he said, would greatly reduce his risk of contracting age-related diseases like cancer and diabetes.
Intermittent diet research carried out by Genesis the breast cancer prevention charity examined 100 overweight women and found that the women who followed a strict 650 calories a day for just two days a week (they ate what they wanted on the other days) reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 40%. The researchers found that this 2 day a week caloric restriction almost halved cancer-causing hormones in high risk women.
Do you live longer if you fast?
Studies of fasting in both rodents and humans appear to indicate a connection between calorie restriction and longevity. In one study of overweight men and women, a calorie-restricted diet improved markers of ageing such as insulin levels* and body temperature**
Fasting might also improve longevity by delaying the onset of age-related diseases including Alzheimer’s, heart disease and diabetes.
* It is widely acknowledged that higher insulin levels promote cancer.
**A large study published in 2011 compared the ages and body temperatures of 18,630 people from 20 to 98 years old and the results indicated low body temperature as a bio marker for longevity.
How to live a longer life!
Especially when you know you’ve probably hit half way!
Most super-centenarians – that is people who live to be 110 or older – seem to have four characteristics in common which might help to explain their longevity.
So here they are:-
- They have been and remain physically active. Even as we get older, daily physical activity should be a priority. It clearly wouldn’t be wise for most to be running marathons at 80 but even as we age we should modify your routine to incorporate things such as daily walks, parking further away from the shops, using the stairs instead of the life or escalator, or maybe taking up hobbies that involve exercise, such as playing golf, tennis or even hiking.
- They have remained positive. Having an optimistic outlook is really important to help to manage stress and also prevent other related health issues such as heart disease. If you don’t already, train yourself to train yourself to start looking at your glass as being half full. Try mindfulness meditation, and use humour for coping with negative thoughts.
- They have remained social. Having a good social network and a close family and close friends is a major influence on health. Spend time with people who make you happy and those who you laugh most with.
- They are spiritual. Regardless of which religion they belong to. Feeling a connection with a higher being or purpose cultivates positivity and spirituality and helps us to age more gracefully.
