Clinical Study Confirms the Effectiveness of Glucosamine and Chondroitin in Treating Osteoarthritis and Supporting Joint Health.
According to the results from an international clinical study trail (MOVES) the combination of glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate was shown to be as effective as treatment with Celebrex (a pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory) after 6 months.
The results of the trial demonstrate the effectiveness of glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate in the management of joint health and wellness. The results have been published in the peer-reviewed journal, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
Evidence has been increasing in favour of the use of glucosamine and chondroitin in osteoarthritis of the knee and this new study further confirms the rationale for using this combination of supplements/neutraceuticals over more expensive pharmaceutical drugs.
The trial involved 606 patients with moderate to severe pain. Patients were randomised to receive 400 mg of chondroitin sulphate and 500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride three times a day or 200 mg of Celebrex every day for 6 months.
Results: Both groups reported a reduction of approximately 50% in the presence of joint swelling, adverse effects were low and similarly distributed between groups.
Conclusions – chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine hydrochloride are as effective as Celebrex in reducing pain, stiffness, functional limitation and joint swelling/effusion after 6 months in patients with painful knee osteoarthritis, with a good safety profile.
